Equal Pay Day

Today is "Equal Pay Day". The point at which (white) women will have earned the same as men did in 2015 alone.  Why? Because white women make on average 79% what men with the same qualifications make. That is absurd. But it gets worse.

African American women are paid, on average, 60 cents and Latinas are paid 55 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic men.

For African-American women, Equal Pay Day won't come until July. For Latinas, it isn't until October. This is unacceptable. Worldwide, the situation is even worse.

The wage disparity analyzed on a global basis is even worse than in the U.S., with the 2015 global average, annual earnings of women only 52% of men’s.

We cannot continue to stand for this. Discrimination based on gender has been outlawed in the U.S. since 1963. It is well past time we acknowledge that the Equal Pay Act was a joke and do something about it. I look forward to the day when we don't need Equal Pay Day.
